How to Find Cheap Flights (Ultimate Guide)
Finding cheap flights is the number one skill that helps you travel more while spending less. The good news? You don’t need to be a travel hacker or spend hours searching every site. With a few simple strategies, you can consistently find cheap airfare to anywhere in the world.
If you’re new to budget travel, start with my Beginner Travel Tips.
1. Use the Best Flight Search Tools
Not all flight websites show the same prices. These are the most accurate tools for finding cheap flights:
- Google Flights — fastest, smartest search engine
- Skyscanner — amazing for flexible travel
- Kayak Explore — maps showing cheapest destinations
- Momondo — finds hidden fares
For cheap destinations to pair with your flight search, check my guide on Cheapest Countries to Visit in 2025.
2. Search Flights in Incognito Mode
Flight prices can increase when you search repeatedly. Using incognito mode prevents sites from tracking your searches, keeping prices lower.
Shortcut: Ctrl + Shift + N (Windows) or Cmd + Shift + N (Mac)
3. Be Flexible With Your Dates
Flexibility is the biggest factor in finding cheap flights. Fly on:
- Tuesdays
- Wednesdays
- Saturdays
And avoid:
- Fridays
- Sundays
- Holiday seasons
Use Google Flights’ “flexible dates” feature to see the cheapest month to fly.
4. Fly to Cheaper Airports
Big cities often have multiple airports — and prices can vary dramatically. Flying into a secondary airport can save $50–$200.
Example: Flying into Kuala Lumpur (KUL) is often 30–50% cheaper than Singapore (SIN). See more budget-friendly tips in my guide to Backpacking Southeast Asia on a Budget.
5. Always Check One-Way Prices
Round-trip flights aren’t always cheaper. Sometimes booking two one-way tickets (even with different airlines) saves a lot of money.
6. Use “Hidden City” Ticketing (With Caution)
Hidden city ticketing means booking a flight with a layover in your actual destination — then not taking the final leg. Sites like Skiplagged reveal these deals.
Warning: Do NOT check luggage. Hand-carry only.
7. Book 1–3 Months Before Travel
This is the “golden window” for booking cheap flights. Too early and prices are high; too late and prices spike.
Exception: Holidays and peak season → book 5–6 months early.
8. Delete Cookies Between Searches
Some websites raise prices when they detect repeated searches. Clearing cookies can reset the price.
9. Set Up Price Alerts
Set alerts on Google Flights or Skyscanner and get notified when prices drop. This is one of the easiest ways to save money.
10. Consider Budget Airlines
Budget airlines offer insanely low prices — $20–$80 flights are common in Europe and Asia.
- Ryanair
- WizzAir
- AirAsia
- Scoot
- Jetstar
Just remember: baggage fees can add up. Pack smarter using my Ultimate Travel Packing List.
11. Check Nearby Cities to the One You Want
Flying into a nearby city and taking a bus or train can cut flight costs dramatically.
Example: Flying into Kraków is often cheaper than flying into Prague, and both cities are easily connected.
12. Travel Light to Avoid Baggage Fees
Baggage fees can double your ticket price — especially with budget airlines. Carry-on only is the cheapest way to travel.
